The Knife of Transposition is Maurice’s dagger that can open portals between planes using gems infused with souls.

Description

  • Can carve tears in reality to create Planar Rips
  • Requires gems infused with souls to power
  • Gems fuse with hilt when activated
  • Energy expenditure based on portal size and duration

Mechanics

Portal Creation:

  • Wielder holds gem and carves tear in reality
  • Gem magically fuses with knife’s hilt
  • Energy feeds from gem into portal
  • Moving knife to expand tear expends more energy
  • Inch-long gem expended in ~2 minutes of maintaining portal
  • Reusing same tear is easier to maintain than creating new one

Powering:

  • Requires souls trapped in gems
  • Souls obtained by killing reflections after separating them from host
  • Each gem provides limited energy based on size
  • Multiple gems needed for large-scale transport

Time Differential:

  • Feywild time moves 2x faster than Material Plane
  • Portal shows this effect - voices pitch-shifted, movement slowed

Piano Man’s Self-Sacrifice:

Journey Inside the Knife:

  • Could see the caravan through walls of the space

Encounter with Piano Man:

  • Heard solitary figure playing Tumbi
  • Half of Piano Man performing Yesterday: “Yesterday… all my troubles were so far away”
  • Helia accidentally destroyed Tumbi with fireball
  • Piano Man upset, asked party to fix his only instrument
  • Helia attempted mend but magic too strong to restore string
  • Velden had some knowledge of Tumbi but insufficient to repair
  • Piano Man gave up, attempted to convince party to restore him to power
  • Party unconvinced and refused to be his champions
  • Dismissed them, pointing at cylindrical elevator

Musical Scale Elevators:

  • Elevators had one small button (down) and one large button (double down)
  • System based on major scale intervals: whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half
  • Pressing double down prompted voice: “major”
  • Party traveled through multiple levels:
    • Level 2 of 7: Desert level full of scorpions (passed through)
    • Level 3 of 7: Forest level full of creatures (passed through)
    • Level 4 of 7: Empty room with arrows labeled “Shadowfell” (down) and “Material” (up)
    • Continued through remaining intervals following major scale pattern
  • Velden managed to rotate single button to reverse direction
  • Party quickly navigated whole-whole-whole-half sequence
  • Bypassed lovingly crafted levels full of monsters and encounters

Exit to Shadowfell:

  • Final elevator embedded into ground at bottom
  • Emerged in mountainous region with perpetual twilight
  • Arrived in Shadowfell plane
